Caring For Your Cutting Board
Maintaining a cutting board is a quick and easy task that will keep your board clean, looking new, and will significantly extend its life.
- NEVER put the board in the dishwasher. The heat and water will warp and splinter the wood and ruin your board immediately.
- NEVER completely submerse or let the board stand in water. The wood will absorb water and potentially warp.
- NEVER Use bleach or harsh cleaners. This will stain the wood and excessively dry the wood.
- NEVER put a wet board flat to dry. If the board dries on one side, it will cause the wood to warp.
TIP: If your board has stains or an odor, cut a lemon in half and scrub the board with it.
(For stubborn problems you may also use white vinegar.)
The acid in these liquids will neutralize the organic material or fats causing the problem.
1.) Thoroughly wash your cutting board with soap and warm water and scrub well using a soft brush, sponge or lint free cloth. Use of ample water and scrubbing is more important than soap in flushing bacteria and other food particles off the board. After washing your cutting board, dry immediately with a clean, dry towel and let it air dry standing up or on a raised rack with air flow.
2.) Once your cutting board has air-dried, apply cutting board oil the surface of the board. Be generous with the application, especially if the wood is significantly dry. You want the surface to be dripping wet on all sides, and we recommend using a small washcloth, lint free towel to spread the oil over the entire surface. Most importantly, let the oil soak into the cutting board for at least a few hours, overnight if possible.
Let your cutting board sit on a wire rack or upright to while the oil soaks in . If your board has been significantly neglected and is overly dry, you may want to even repeat this process.
3.) Apply our board cream, Apply a small amount of cream onto the board using a clean, soft, lint-free cloth, buff the cream/wax into the wood in a circular pattern, forming a thin coat. Repeat over the entire surface of the board and including the sides. It's not necessary to let our cream soak into the board.
That’s it! Your done! You should maintain your premium Appalachian Craftsman board as outlined above monthly, or when your board feels dry.
Board oil penetrates the wood, board cream contains a wax that acts as a physical barrier on the surface of the wood that helps protect against stains and liquids. The creamy way also aids in sanitation, as it fills and seals in knife scars and minor voids where bacteria would gather.
Proper use of oil and cream provide a protective outer layer and helps seal the wood so that it is safe, easy to clean and guards against warping.
